About: Like many children’s books of the early 20th century written by white authors, this text employs racist imagery and characterizations. These images and character tropes are directly tied to blackface, minstrelsy and post-emancipation stereotypes about black folks in the US. See Little Black Sambo and other dehumanizing visual representations, like Mammy and Tar Baby references.
