Vintage South African Ndebele Ceremonial Doll

$135.00 $90.00

This is a vintage South African Ndebele Ceremonial doll, purchased at an estate sale at Villa Lewaro, the estate built by Madame CJ Walker in the early 20th century. This doll is 26.25” inches tall and hand beaded with intricate designs. Some beads on the bottom have come loose; this is an easy repair.

About: In The Ndebele tribe, the brass rings around the neck symbolize wealth and status. Only married women are allowed to wear the rings, which are called "dzilla". During courtship, a suitor would place a Ceremonial doll outside a young woman's hut indicating his intention to propose marriage to her.
