This is a vintage handcarved wood mask with pigmented striations and an elongated, heart-shaped face. Needs wire or string to be mounted. No major imperfections and still in very good condition. 23.5" tall by 9" wide by 7" deep.
About: The Fang tribe are spread over a vast area along the Atlantic coast line of equatorial Africa and can be found in Cameroon equatorial Guinea and Gabon namely along the bank of the Ogowe river. Fang masks were worn by spiritual leaders during rituals to ward off evil spirits, or as symbols of wealth and prosperity. Fang masks are noted as inspiration for some of Pablo Picasso’s cubist work.
