About: Freedomways was the leading African-American theoretical, political and cultural journal of the 1960s–1980s, beginning with their first publishing in 1961. Freedomways was founded by Louis Burnham, Edward Strong, WEB DuBois and its first general editor, Shirley Graham Du Bois. Some of the notable Black intellectuals and artists whose work appeared in Freedomways were James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Paul Robeson, Nikki Giovanni, Lorraine Hansberry, as well as visual artists, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Elizabeth Catlett.
