About: Signs of this style originate in Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Ghana - painted by either hairstylists or paid artists. They depict elaborate styles of hair braiding for women or contemporary styles of hair cuts for men, using bright house/commercial paints on plywood boards, masonite or recycled wood. They are set out next to or around the stylists/barbers to give examples of the kind of work they can do, in order to attract customers. These rare signs are incredible displays of West African ingenuity, entrepreneurship, creativity and beauty/visual culture.
