About: The Feminist Party was founded by civil rights attorney and women's rights activist/revolutionary Florence Kennedy in 1971, a political party that would envision feminism as a political movement and not simply an “alternative lifestyle choice.” From that radical platform the next year, Shirley Chisholm was launched as a candidate for president of the United States–the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination and the first major-party Black candidate for president. After founding the Feminist Party, Florence Kennedy also went on to cofound the National Black Feminist Organization in 1973.
